Originally expected to focus on his relationship with Bruce Lee the film couldn't gain the necessary rights and instead examines Ip Man adapting to life in Hong Kong and the treatment of the Chinese locals by the British.
The first film did so well at displaying the talent and ability of Ip Man that they were in danger of creating an invincible idol.
To challenge this in the sequel they take some liberties whilst following the tested formula of going bigger.
