All this, without any wasted dialogue or exposition, expressed through glances, a few awkward words, and a song.
When I saw this scene within a scene, I knew I'd love the series. Now, having just finished watching the first season The relationships are interesting, particularly Nolan's and his Irisa's.
Some people dislike Defiance, and have been openly critical about it. One criticism is that it resembles Serenity.
There is a surface resemblance, but for those who miss Serenity, that's not actually bad. And it's only evident really in the first season.
One newspaper reviewer said the show was incomprehensible. He must have been in a severely altered state when watching it, because I don't think anyone intelligent could watch it without finding it clear and understandable.
I suspect he just doesn't like science fiction and can't be bothered to try to get his head around its concepts. No pleasin' reviewers like that.
The partially terraformed earth, built and growing on the ruins of our world, is beautifully realized. There were a couple of things I didn't like, in the first season.
One was the relationship between the human teenager and her alien fiance. It was okay but dragged a bit, and lacked emotional tension, maybe because the girl was written as nicey-nice, endlessly adaptable and forgiving.
Irisa is a far more believable teenager. Another thing I didn't care for was the relationship between the mayor's sister, a prostitute, and an alien woman, which moved very quickly from the alien asking her for some sex tips, to seemingly gratuitious excuses to show the two beautiful women in bed.
Not having sex, but suggesting it. I have nothing against lesbian relationships, but this one did felt gratuitous and contrived, thrown in to titillate male viewers who swing that way.
I'm not objecting to their relationship being lesbian, but I don't like the insertion of sexually provocative scenes that have little to do with the story arc or main characters.
I also didn't care for the way their relationship ended, which again stretched credibility. One character meets her end in a way the audience would have seen coming long before; she was portrayed as intelligent, so it's hard to see how she couldn't have seen it coming.
But these are minor gripes. All in all the show is fun, creative and wonderfully imaginative. I love this show. Too bad it is only 3 seasons.

It does remind me a bit of Firefly and I also loved that one. If our planet had aliens and we Co existed with them this is how I would imagine it would be.
The characters, even the bad and nasty ones , you can learn to like because of their experiences. The way every one is classified by race is so believable and distinct that you will understand why each one is so different.
This was the only show I really loved from this network. Oh Rayetso!!!! I just came over here to ask one single important question about this entire series: why didn't they just make the Irathians wear gloves if the virus only passed through skin to skin contact?
Other than the obvious answer that it would've killed the entire episode, lol. This is a fantastic show I wish they hadn't moved it to be paid, but well.
I love it enough to buy it, so they are doing something right for their profits! It's really nice too to watch a bunch of different folks squabble yet still get along at the end of the day considering that's not anything like it is in the real world right now!
There are a few themes through the show that make it a little too adult for little kids, but I think a middle schooler and up would really enjoy it, and there are some great lessons along the way to discuss afterward.
All in all, this is a fantastic rendition of a family sci-fi genre show. Kind of feels a bit Family Robinsonish, with a dash of Star Trek, and you also get a bit of an eerie feeling that the show almost went full steam-punk.

Full concentration is needed to work out exactly what is going on. Full marks for viewers who did. Not only is it far from clear exactly how the planet so quickly reached its present state, but each group including humans seems rife with hidden agendas and feuds - uneasy alliances only formed when faced with a common enemy.
Local Badlands are aptly named. Despite much confusion, I was surprised at how soon I began to enjoy most of it.
Grant Bowler does capably what is needed as tough, no-nonsense Joshua Logan - his highly unusual alien companion, Irisa, very much a force to reckon with.
Their costumes and home may be so alluringly white, but their intentions dark indeed. It is good to see emphasis more on characters than special effects the latter impressive nonetheless.
The episodes vary, but Ep. The box set could have come with more information and bonuses. I had to go online to learn about the interesting background events, details of who played what, correct spellings of characters, etc.

Oh dear, you might think; yet another American alien invasion sci-fi series which will inevitably get cancelled. Set in , following the arrival of huge alien ships thirty three years earlier, Earth has been terraformed and a number of alien races collectively known as the Voltan survive in a delicate co-existence alongside humanity.
There is a belt of debris surrounding Earth composed of destroyed Voltan ark-ships chunks of which periodically fall to Earth.
The independent town of Defiance, on the old site of St. Louis, is founded on its mining industry where the global power play between humans and aliens is reflected in its day-to-day politics.
Cue a whole load of stock characters taken almost wholesale from other series'; the gritty ex-soldier lawman and his adopted alien daughter, the lady of negotiable virtue with a heart, the plucky young mayor, the conniving and power hungry businessman, the despotic government, the solid old-school mine owner Throw in some alien artefacts and plenty of sub-narratives and you have the recipe for a sure-fire winner.
Some of the CGI is a bit clunky and game'ish and occasionally they end up in the good old Stargate quarry looking remarkably un-terraformed but the whole story just rolls along at a very satisfying pace, there's plenty of complexity in both character and plotting and hints of great things to come.
Against all odds and somewhat paradoxically, it looks like Defiance could turn out to be a gripping and original science fiction series.
Let's hope the moronic network bean-counters don't cancel this show; it would be really nice to have a sci-fi series end properly for a change - Fringe managed it, maybe Defiance can as well.

The first couple of episodes seem a bit slow - but enjoyable- and then it really takes off. To begin with i thought it was a bit like an inferior Firefly but by the end I couldn't wait to see the next episode and hoped they were making a second series because there is a lot of potential.
My husband, who is not a great sci- fi fan enjoyed it as well I don't think that it was just because there are pretty women in it. Anyone who likes Fringe, Firefly, Startrek and the like give it a try.
I bought it because of other people's comments on amazon. The trailer looked really cool but when I watched it , it did not live up to expectations.
Non the less it was okay. Much of it is not special effects but cartoony computer graphics of sorts and the acting cheesy but I kind of liked the plots.
A new earth with new residents living amongst the humans all trying to get along but of course you have to have the yobs whom want to rule and bring disorder.
The thing I disliked most about it was the kind of new agey message.

The earth has been damaged during a prolonged war with aliens, and much of the flora and fauna are no longer recognizable. Nolan starts out apologizing about some nonsense with a married woman he didn't know was married His daughter isn't giving him the time of day.
He apologizes, promises never to mess 'round with women again, then turns on the equivalent of the future ipod, and puts on the Johnny Cash song, "Jackson," a wonderful, timeless ballad about something men and women have been hassling over for generations.
The song is a duet between Cash and June Carter. Nolan starts singing along. Irisa gives him a sidelong glance, starts softening a little, and joins in singing on the second verse.
