The film as a whole should not be viewed as a representation of John Nash's life, many important things from Sylvia Nash's book have been omitted.
But crucially it's important to note that in making this film, the makers have brought Nobel Prize winner Nash to the public's attention, whilst simultaneously giving awareness to the sadness of those suffering with schizophrenia.
OK, so it's far from perfect in its portrayal of Nash the man, but ultimately the cinematic world is a far better place when the likes of A Beautiful Mind are being made and the film lovers are flocking to see it.

Agent Hanratty Tom Hanks. It's funny, because it's true! Great review of a terrific film. I couldn't agree more. Hank's stiff, square, plodding Hanratty is the perfect juxtaposition next to DiCaprio's charming, affable Abignale.
After Body of Lies I think is a hidden gem that many people have not seen but is a really good movie. The one about dreams with the chick from Juno was "supposed" to be really good according to everybody- and in a sense, I guess it was- but for special effects and for an original story.
Not for something that made you feel good or something you wanted to see again after you watched it once. I thought that movie was depressing and was too long.

Very cold, very mechanical. No room for Cary Grant. But the mid-Sixties, the day before yesterday, is the Stone Age security-wise. No scanners, no computers: all you have to do is talk your way in.
That's the beauty of the film, watching Frank improvise his way through, from the first day at his new high school to his first audacious showdown with the FBI in the pork-pie-hatted person of Agent Hanratty Tom Hanks.
Hanratty's character is the opposite of Frank: dogged, methodical, relentless, square. He's a plodder even when he's running, and the New England accent seems to slow him down even more.
But, coming straight from the funereal Road To Perdition , Hanks brings a surprisingly light touch to a character who is, after all, a dull bureaucrat from the check-fraud department.
Jeff Nathanson's script deserves a nod for all the little unobtrusive connections it makes: look for the reprise of "Embraceable You", as Frank's prospective in-laws are at the sink washing dishes; it's a few seconds, packed with everything the kid's lost and everything he hopes to get back, and it's completely unforced.
Given the leaden self-importance of A. But Spielberg has revived a lost genre: the warm thriller, a film about a genial manipulator that manages to be genial but not too obviously manipulative itself.

And of course since its a Spielberg film its very personal. Spielberg was interested in the Frank Abagnale character because as a youngster he also came from a broken family and wanted to be someone else.
Spielberg would sneak onto the studios and tell people that he worked there. Also, the real Frank Abagnale jr.
Well made, extremely well acted and sharply written. Viewers seem to forget that this is really a film about the breaking up of a family and the aftermath.

It is really a trifecta of scenes: the preceding scene where the family sings along to some corny TV show with fiance on daddy Baldwin's lap - signalling family rapprochement after the daughter's abortion; then the following scene when Abagnale attempts to confess his true identity to his prospective father in law.
We get the overwhelming sense that all Abagnale wants is a happy family. Apart from the plot, the performances of Walken and Hanks are also superb.
The irrepressibly optimistic Walken's descent into more and more menial jobs is gut-wrenching; when his son buys him a Cadillac and Walken announces it to the restaurant brings tears to my eyes.
The plausible growing affection Hanks develops for his quarry makes perfect sense in the context. The scene where Di Caprio looks through the window at the half-sister he has never met and also sees his remarried mother is poignant without Hollywood treacle.

Mark, You really should read the book. I remember reading 3 or 4 times in 8th grade many years ago You will finish it in one sitting, it is that good.
The movie was nice but I was very disappointed having read the book. The book focuses on his scams, the movie on his family and the FBI.
The movie also leaves out many of his best scams and his utterly harrowing time in a French prison. Still the movie was entertaining but not what many of us who are fans of the book were hoping for.

A few things stand out and of course the performances are terrific. Leonardo Dicaprio is believable as a guy that can convince people that he's someone else.
Dicaprio is a charmer and is very smooth as we watch his character do some fancy talk to the young ladies. The sign of a great film star. And Christopher Walken gives one of his best performances in his already interesting career.
The last scene of him as he talks to his son in the restaurant is so moving that it reflects on the great talent of Walken.
You can understand why Dicaprio admires and loves his father. Walken conveys these emotions and makes the audience react just accurately.
I'll be rooting for him at Oscar time. Another impressive thing about this film is the beautiful cinematography by Janusz Kaminski who's a real artist with a camera and has worked on several Spielberg films.
