And yet - somehow - he has been able to capture the imagination of millions around the world with this story centered around an eerie mystery: Who are those "titans" that have nearly wiped out humanity?
Where do they come from? What do they want? Apart from eating human beings, that is. People have known for more than a hundred years that the titans are out there, but they have buried their own heads in the sand, barricaded themselves behind high walls.
Out of sight, out of mind. Now those walls are crumbling, and the threat can no longer be ignored! Thankfully, our young heroes finally take action - and as it turns out, countless young readers around the world can relate to the desire to restore human dignity and, yes, save the world: "Finally we can be useful," as Krista puts it just before the battle starts.
A key element that makes Attack on Titan so popular is its openness, I think: a wide range of meanings can be attached to those all-devouring "titans" that threaten the survival of the human species.
Do they represent the processes of globalization? Corporate power? The mass media? The government? Or yet another oppressive development or institution?

The cliffhanger in the end brings back so many memories. Can a main character die so quickly??? The characters are so well written and interesting. Some even steal the show from the supposedly "main characters" One thing I can tell you.
Isayama doesn't disappoint. He likes to make us suffer though and to break our hearts I suppose? Plus now I can focus more on different details. Jun 22, Lottie Eve rated it really liked it.
I have always felt that the giants in fiction today are starting to become bumbling, stupid fools that just happen to be oversized and love destroying things, stripped of the fear they held around them a long time ago.
So whenever I see this wildly popular manga series online or in the bookstore, I think nothing of it and pass by it.
That is, until the anime adaption started airing this year and I saw the opening. And that opening was just so glorious that I just had to at least try ou 4.
And that opening was just so glorious that I just had to at least try out the first volume of Attack on Titan. Hajime Isayama has completely went above my expectations with his portrayal of the giants, or titans in this manga.
The humans are constantly losing battles against the titans, losing hope, and losing dignity, later retreating inside a wall that is no more than a cage in humiliation, only to have it be broken down one hundred years later, right when the people inside it are starting to feel safe and peaceful.
Hopefully the mangaka keeps writing the titans in this way. Both those scenes and others were beautifully executed in a way that only made it more terribly emotional.
The characters are great and I am really invested in their story of fighting back and survival. Armin, the other male lead, is very weak and hates himself for that, ignoring all his other good qualities.
Again, it has been done before but is written well. And like Eren, he also has a desire to escape from inside the wall. But this is the first volume, and If the side characters do get a more important role than their current one, my love for this manga is only going to increase.
Isayama also includes a couple of lovely pages that give information on how the wall was constructed and how the equipment the characters use to fight the titans work.
The art is hand-drawn and it shows quite a bit. Not that that is a bad thing. The backgrounds are wonderfully detailed, as well as the characters.
I do think that the body proportions are a little off sometimes, especially in the beginning, which is when the characters are children.
But the flawed drawings of the humans are immediately made up for with how the titans are drawn. They are incredibly unsettling, many of them having mouths that are set into huge grins, never turning into anything else.
The colossal titan is the most remarkable as it is literally only muscle, bones, and teeth. If the utter brilliance of this manga continues, well, I dare say that it might be able to tie with Pandora Hearts as my favorite manga and might even beat it.
I know that this might be too early to start assuming things, but I am seriously impressed. Also, that cliffhanger is freaking genius. View all 6 comments.

After what seems a slow start but still an interesting world-build, the emotional impact is still severe and bone-crunchingly immediate.

The ending of this volume is very strong, but honestly, I am not entirely certain I like the artwork that much.
In full honesty, I already know a lot of the story because I just did a marathon of the Anime, but because of how it left off, I'm now in a tear to know what happens.
I'm pretty sure this manga will step-up, too, so I'm remaining patient. I might not have continued this manga under other circumstances.

Y'all know I love me some Attack on Titan. I just couldn't help myself. Don't look at me like that. One thing I really like about this book was that it pretty much was in line with the show.

There's a lot of hype surrounding Attack on Titan, though a lot of that is for the anime version. I've never seen it, and after reading the first volume of the manga, I don't know if I'll bother.
Attack on Titan is based on a solid premise: a century ago, man-eating giants, called titans, suddenly appeared and attacked humanity en masse.
Now, the remaining survivors live inside high, thick walls, and have generally given up on defeating the titans.
So far, so good. And what the manga does best i There's a lot of hype surrounding Attack on Titan, though a lot of that is for the anime version.
And what the manga does best is to give you a very real sense of the panic and desperate fear that goes with a titan attack on the city. When the titans were actually attacking, it was a riveting read.
But the book doesn't spend all its time detailing attacks. That's probably a good thing, in general, because I just would have gotten tension fatigue.
But this is where the problems come in. The characters aren't particularly compelling or likeable, and the dialog isn't convincing. It's possible that the latter could be due to the translation, but Kodansha translations are usually pretty good.
And I hate the art. It looks amateurish to me. There are a few panels that are effective, and the titans' designs are chilling, but in general it just looks clumsy.
It seems like the anime has a different, and much better, art style. So I don't like the writing, and I don't like the art. The premise is good, but is that enough to keep me reading?

This is a review of the entire series. Attack on Titan takes place in a horrifying dystopian fantasy world that somewhat mirrors our own, like an apocalyptic Europe where the last remnants of humanity live behind massive, skyscraper-sized walls to protect themselves from the giant, man-eating monsters known as Titans lurking just beyond them.
The walls have successfully protected humanity for a hundred years, yet that short era of false peace comes to an end when a colossal titan bigger and deadl This is a review of the entire series.
The walls have successfully protected humanity for a hundred years, yet that short era of false peace comes to an end when a colossal titan bigger and deadlier than any other of its kind brings judgement to the last survivors of the world.
The story follows an ambitious and hotheaded young boy named Eren Yeager, who vows to take revenge on the titans after they break down the walls of his city, killing his mother and thousands of innocent people right before his very eyes.
The story begins with Eren having a disturbing nightmare. Incredible foreshadowing is a reoccurring thing in Attack on Titan.
The most minor and seemingly insignificant characters and events always end up having major significance much later down the road.
The further you get into the series, the more you begin to realize that the author had every single plot point, revelation and twist planned out before he ever even published the first chapter.
After Eren wakes up from his nightmare, we are introduced to Armin and Mikasa. After their relatively peaceful lives are torn apart by a titan invasion, Eren, Armin and Mikasa enlist themselves in the survey corp, an organization of soldiers and tacticians that are trained in the art of killing titans and defending civilians from their wrath using a pair of swords and a device known as 3D Maneuver Gear.
The 3D Maneuver Gear was created to be able to navigate through a three dimensional space. With it, a person can travel from point to point at extremely fast speeds by firing steel wires with hooks attached on the ends so they can latch onto structures and titans.
This is a very unique way of portraying tiny humans being able to stand a chance against giant titans in combat. The weakness of all titans is the nape of the neck, and the only way to reach the nape is to perform all kinds of twists and turns in midair with the maneuver gear until you can give yourself an opening.
After being put through years of brutal military training, Eren and his friends are prepared to lay their lives on the line to exterminate every last titan in the world and bring freedom to humanity once more.
The biggest strengths of Attack on Titan are the numerous plot twists and the layers of mystery that are evident from the very beginning.
Some of the twists are so massive, that they literally change the genre of the entire series because of the new perspectives they bring.
It can go from survival horror, to psychological mystery, to political thriller at the drop of a hat and none of it is ever done just for shock value.
Because of the amount of planning ahead at play here, Attack on Titan has a truly impressive level of re-readability.
The constantly shifting genres and conflicts is what keeps it fresh and exciting. Even when the world is destroyed and overrun with monsters, humans will still clash and tear each other to pieces.
And I absolutely loved the ridiculous levels of tension this conflict caused. Just like everything else in this series, the misleading nature of the early chapters is totally intentional.
I went into this series expecting a straightforward, action-packed monster movie type of story like Jurassic Park or Godzilla, and it does start out that way to be perfectly fair.

I'm not sure if the people who did the show added all that in to give the characters more backstory, or if they pulled that stuff in from flashbacks in later volumes of the manga.
As someone who watched the show first, I might be filling in blanks and details in my head that someone who hasn't watched won't have.

This is some dark stuff. It's listed as YA, but in my opinion it probably shouldn't be. It is listed as horror so at least there's that. I mean, people are getting eaten left and right so it's a little rough if you are emotionally sensitive, or get attached to characters easily.
If so, I would say this book isn't for you. The characters are fascinating, and I'm hoping we will see more of their backstories in future volumes.
I This is a really good story, and the art is amazing, but be prepared. I love how each person is completely different. They all have distinct personalities, and the art is impeccable, so it's easy to tell them apart.

My first manga, but it definitely won't be my last. View 2 comments. May 30, Magdalen rated it it was amazing Shelves: manga.
This is my second time reading the entire series 'cause season 2 is coming to an end and the waiting for new chapters has become unbearable.
Although i know exactly what happens next I can't help the shivers and the tearing up especially when I see characters whom I love and are no longer alive.
Hell no. The cliffhanger in the en This is my second time reading the entire series 'cause season 2 is coming to an end and the waiting for new chapters has become unbearable.

After what seems a slow start but still an interesting world-build, the emotional impact is still severe and bone-crunchingly immediate.
There's usually never a warning before someone you love dies, but it's doubly so here. The manga has a very serious tone and it wears its heart on its sleeve.

Coming in as an anime fan, I think the anime did this a lot better. This seems like a rough sketch by comparison. Feb 20, Ivan rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novels.
A century ago, the grotesque giants known as Titans appeared and consumed all but a few thousand humans. The survivors took refuge behind giant walls.
Today, the threat of the Titans is a distant memory, and a boy named Eren yearns to explore the world beyond Wall Maria. But what began as a childish dream will become an all-too-real nightmare when the Titans return and humanity is once again on the brink of extinction ….
Attack on Titan is the award-winning and New York Times -bestselling series that is the manga hit of the decade!
Ich protestiere dagegen.
Wacker, die prächtige Phrase und ist termingemäß
Ich bin endlich, ich tue Abbitte, aber diese Antwort veranstaltet mich nicht. Kann, es gibt noch die Varianten?
