This lets you know that the Duo is getting power and that its internal rechargeable battery is being charged. When you turn on the Bluetooth function of your phone you will be able to pair your phone to the Duo.
As such he is a very valuable asset to casino boss Shelly Kaplow, himself having enough problems of his own trying to stop his old school casino being revamped to the point of losing it's sense of class.
With the casino dropping a million plus in one day, Shelly takes action to protect what is his. As with many viewers I suspect, I was attracted to this film by the cast and the fact that it received a few nods from the Oscars despite being showy enough to win.
It isn't perfect of course and the writing is where the problems lie; the story did rely on the audience buying into it and at times the dialogue comes very close to corn but just misses.
The only time I felt really let down by it was the ending, which, although fitting with the spirit of the film, missed a great chance to be dark, depressing and beautiful all at the same time.
Despite the odd weakness in the material, these are almost totally covered by a superb collection of performances. Macy may be aware of typecasting but so what if he keeps getting roles like this, probably one of his best performances since Fargo.
He is typically the little man who we cannot help but root for and Macy does well never to let Bernie become pathetic to the point that he loses the audience.
Bello also does pretty well and even convincingly falls for Bernie even though the film offers her very little opportunity to show a real development of love there.
She is pretty but not to the point where she is an unconvincing waitress and her dashed hopes are well worn by her.
However the one performance that dominated the film was Baldwin who does very well in delivering a role that could easily have become caricature.
A great performance and one that definitely deserved his Oscar nod. Hatosy is OK even if his part of the story is not as good as the others and Nascarella will be a well known face to many due to many roles in films for Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese and a few other big films.
Overall this is not a perfect film and it needs you to really buy into its fantasy world to really enjoy it but it works well and turned out to be an enjoyable, low key and atmospheric little love story that was never brilliant at any one thing but managed to be touching, brutal, funny and, ultimately, quite satisfying even if my darker side wanted an ending with more punch.

This is a sometimes rural story of a Cooler, played by Macy. A cooler is someone who is highered by a gambling clu and stands at a table where someone is winning big bucks.
Macy plays a lack luster man who lost big bucks with his gambling, and is now indebted to the boss. He acts as a cooler until he has paid his debt off.
His life is his motel room and his job. That is until he meets a bar waitress, Maria Bello. He is instantly attracted and somehow a romance is started.
The film revolves around Macy as the cooler, Baldwin is the brutal casino manager, and Bello plays the cocktail waitress. This is their story, and it is a good one.
The violence is often too much, but hang in there. William H. Macy is Bernie Lootz. They both work for Shelly Alec Baldwain who runs the casino and who is living in the past.
The owners want him to innovate, but he refuses. That sets the mood for the film. The question posed is can any of these characters change? The movie has fun with its characters given their situation.
Bernie for example lives in a rundown motel with a hooker next door. His response is to turn up the TV. Bernie explains his talent as being himself.
Just being him, ruins the people around him. A dilemma arises however as both of their luck changes and there are all kinds of unintended consequences.
He comes from the Sinatra school. The forces it is up against is represented by Larry Ron Livingston a young executive brought in by the owners to bring a younger crowd to the casino.
He ends up overdosing and replaced by a hip new singer that Larry booked. One person found this helpful. Can anyone excuse the irregularities of audio volume in digitally encoded media?
Why is most of the sound volume on this film so low? Why is the dialog volume even lower? There is a cute idea in the script but there are so many needless twists and turns, scenes that are just cyclical repeats of previous scenes, the dialog is a bit turgid, too.
Too bad, better producers might have made a hit but this Cliched right down to the sad saxophone sound track. By the middle of it I was laughing out loud.
The writing is terrible not even Macy or Baldwin can deliver it well. One giant eye roll. One star for unintentionally funny. Alec Baldwin and William J.
Macey are stellar. So too is Maria Bello. The plot revolves around old school casino tactics. Macey is alleged to have such bad luck he can COOL off any card game.
Bello is an affable cocktail waitress who falls in love with him. Meantime, Baldwin plays the tough casino boss. Well worth seeing. Baldwin received an Academy Award Nomination in his role.

The Blu-ray picture quality is not reference material however i was really happy with it to what i have been used to in the past.
The colour palette has a muted sort of feel throughout the film, overall sharp picture and grain is quite nice. I'm no technical expert but i have tried to describe what the Blu-ray looks like in simple terms.
I have taken some photos of the actual item which comes in a nice slipcase complete with informative booklet about the film.
Also taken some screenshots of the film from my TV on a normal Samsung phone with no enhancements.
I have not watched the DVD that came in the set only the Blu-ray.
